Leaving for the Train

Today has been a whirlwind. Lots to blog about, but I don't have time to write a book.

I'll try to sum up my day the best I can in one or two sentences.

Before we took Alex from the orphanage, the doctor came up to us and told us that Alex is taking medication (just right now) twice a day to calm him down----- and she gave me enough medicine to get us home. I would normally be totally against this----but........

he needs to calm down.

And you think you had it hard John, traveling with Dennis----phish!-- that was a breeze. Julia and I have already discussed our strategy and tag-team sleeping. One way or another--- we are coming home!

Train tonight and plane this Friday. Did I mention we have to leave for the airport at 3am?

You're getting closer to home.

Wise decision to keep him on the med the doctor has him on as you don't want any further stress for him. You and Julia sure are a great team. Just think how this whole experience has enriched and matured her.

Hope all the travel (train, plane, taxi) goes smoothly.

Can't wait to see the post with the homecoming.

I haven't been able to follow your journey too well since we've only been home a little over a week ourselves. I'm so glad to see that things have progressed at a rapid pace. At least compared to our seven weeks in Ukraine.

Best wishes and have a safe trip home!

Oh wow, almost home! HOORAY!!!! About the med, have someone call your pediatrician and find out if it's one that can be stopped, or if you have to wean him off of it. Some meds will cause withdrawal (and some serious problems) if you just suddenly stop them. Hopefully the one he's on is a short acting drug that doesn't need a weaning process.

Good thing you have him with you! I just wonder why he's on this medicine? Be sure to check it up once you're home!
I hope you'll have a safe journey!

Hi Christine,
I can't beleive they didn't tell you about the meds before, it's not like they didn't have time, and it's kind of a BIG thing. Wow. I sure hope all goes well for you, you guys are in my thoughts alot. I forgot to ask... how did the children like their goodie bags you and Julia made for them? I bet they loved the phones, I just hope they don't get put on the shelf!
Safe Travels,

So thrilled for all of you Christine- for Alex to be home with his family, and for you and Julia to be HOME with your family!! You are all in my prayers daily!
Please don't feel bad about the meds to calm Alex down. I am a Neuro-psychologist, and brains are wired differently. Once he is home, comfortable, secure, etc. etc, he will probably no longer need the meds. Rignt now you just want to get that beautiful boy home safely.
Blessings to all of you...

Fingers crossed that it will all go well. First long trips are usually never perfect, but I'm sure you'll be able to keep Alex calm and entertained enough :) Have a safe journey! PS: I can relate to what you mean about the simple Ukrainian life....walking slowly, looking at people, etc. I'm afraid I'm beginning to slide back into the "old ways" already lol! Yes, we need to walk a lot more. Sweat can be showered off ;)

I have a couple of friends whose children ran like crazy...ran through the Moscow airport, one of them! Ran through the Ukraine hotel, the other two....and that poor mom came so close to disrupting before she left Russia. And now all of these children are calm and happy and sorted out.

Good thing you have Julia, though!

Don't know what meds they gave you but meds that "calm down" adults actually increase irritability in kids. I know you will have it checked out once you are home. Praying for wisdom for you!
